Two Wheels and Not a Care in the World

When is the last time you hopped on a bike and pedaled your way on a two-wheeled adventure? Do you remember back to when you were a kid and the feeling of absolute freedom that encompassed you once you were on that bicycle and not having a single care in the entire world?

You can experience that again, even as an adult—and Topsail Island, North Carolina is just the place to do it. Grab your bike and let’s go!

Best Places to Ride a Bicycle in Topsail

We’re highlighting a few of the best, but certainly not the only, places to ride your bike for a scenic tour of Topsail Island on two wheels. Try one or try them all during your Topsail beach vacation.

Topsail Island Bike Path

The Topsail Bike and Pedestrian Path begins at the Town Hall parking lot in North Topsail Beach and goes north on New River Inlet Road to the North Topsail Beach Park. The path is for bicycle and pedestrian traffic only, so you’re free to walk or ride without fear of other traffic. There is also a bike lane along Highway 210 which extends south from the intersection of 210 and Island Drive to the Surf City line for your biking pleasure.

Bicycling Around the Topsail Towns

Biking through the towns of North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach is a wonderful way to tour the island. Begin from a different starting point each day and pedal your way along the side streets to see where they lead you. All of Topsail Island has a bike-friendly mentality with lower speed limits than on the mainland. Spring and fall are the best seasons for riding with pleasant temperatures and less traffic than during the busier summer beach season.

Bicycling on the Beach

You may want to consider biking on the beach which offers incredible views and a really good leg workout. Choose low tide when you can ride near the shoreline where the sand is more compacted and easier to pedal through than the softer, deeper sand. Single-speed bikes work best on the beach, as do beach cruisers which have fat tires. Don’t forget to rinse the salt and sand off your bike when you’re done!

Bike Rentals on Topsail Island

No bikes? No problem! Topsail Island’s local shops have you covered from North Topsail Beach to Surf City to Topsail Beach. Don’t worry about lugging that extra equipment with you on your Topsail beach vacation and instead stop by one of these local sports outfitters to get your pedal on.

Topsail Island Beach Service, North Topsail Beach

Topsail Island Beach Service delivers what you need right to your doorstep in each of the Topsail Island towns. Check out their daily, weekly and combo bike rentals. They offer a plethora of other beach equipment rentals as well.

50 South Surf Shop, Surf City

50 South Surf Shop is conveniently located at the heart of Topsail Island with hourly, daily and weekly bike rentals for you to enjoy. Stop by the shop or book your bike rental right online. They offer a variety of other sport equipment rentals, too.

Herring’s Outdoor Sports, Surf City

Located right in Surf City, Herring’s Outdoor Sports offers beach rentals and more. Included in their selection are beach cruiser bikes and 3-speed bikes with hourly, daily and weekly rates available. See what they have in store and then plan your adventure.

The golf course at Belvedere has certainly evolved since its conception in the 1970’s. Belvedere now features a rare combination of six par threes, seven par fours, and five par fives to achieve a par of 71. Located in coastal Hampstead, NC, the front nine takes you out toward the Intracoastal Waterway and back toward the Clubhouse; the back nine ventures you inland and then back toward the Clubhouse–forming a giant figure 8 without any parallel fairways. This design offers a sure test in the normally breezy conditions. You will experience the winds coming from every direction during your round, so be prepared.

Located just off coastal highway, US-17 in Hampstead, NC. is a challenging, Scottish links style 18-hole championship course. From the longest tees it features 6,713 yards of golf for a par of 72. The course was designed by Randy Blanton and opened in 1999.

Although there are no trees on the course, there are the typical links hazards of tall bunkers, water, and waste areas. True to the tradition, the course demands excellent shot placement on almost every hole. And yes, like all links courses, occasionally one must factor in the wind.

Nestled like a sleeping giant along the Intracoastal Waterway the beautiful North Shore Country Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Majestically blending the game to its surroundings, architect Bob Moore offers both the novice golfer and seasoned player an enjoyable and challenging experience. This puts North Shore on the must-play list when visiting the Topsail Island area.

When creating the design for North Shore, Moore was able to make use of the many natural areas found on the property and incorporate them in a layout that harmonizes with the natural beauty of the coastal marshes of Eastern North Carolina. The inland holes offer a retreat from the prevailing sea breeze and are bordered by tall pines offering a distinctly different look and feel.
