Beach Nourishment on Topsail Island

What Is Beach Nourishment?

Beach nourishment (also known as beach replenishment) is a coastal management practice that helps protect and preserve the shoreline. It involves adding sand to eroded beaches to restore their width, protect oceanfront structures, and maintain the natural beauty of the island. These projects are essential for long-term storm protection, erosion control, and recreational use.

On barrier islands like Topsail, nourishment is a routine and necessary process to ensure the sustainability of our coastline for residents and visitors alike.

What to Expect

Beach nourishment is typically scheduled during the off-season (November through March) to minimize interruption during our prime vacation season, although specific projects may extend into summer season.

During active phases of work, guests may notice:

  •  Equipment or pipelines on the beach
  •  Daytime construction activity (Towns may approve for 24/7 work for specific projects)
  •  Temporary access limitations in localized areas

Work generally moves quickly along the shoreline, and most nearby beach areas remain open and usable throughout the project.

Your vacation can still be enjoyed as planned. Many guests are minimally impacted and still enjoy full access to the beach just steps away from the active work zone.

Important Notice About Beach Nourishment Impacts

Beach nourishment activity is conducted and managed by a combination of local and federal agencies, such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and individual town governments. Access Realty is not involved in the planning, scheduling, or execution of these projects and does not receive advance notice of exact dates, times, or locations of work.

While we will do our best to notify guests if we become aware of activity that may affect their stay, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted beach access during active nourishment projects.
